This Week in the Blogs
By Rachel Tanner
Meridian Magazine Intern

  • July will soon be over, but before it is, I think we should all take one more look at patriotism and the American flag. One blogger has written a very thought-provoking piece about why she likes flag raising, even at church. She talks about the ritual of it and how spiritual it is for those involved. She discusses how flag raising can tie us to the past and the future. Perhaps patriotism should be celebrated year round, not just in July. Check out her thoughts here.

  • Salt Lake’s Historic Mormon Chapels
I was so excited when I found this blog because it demonstrates some of the Mormon history in the Salt Lake City area. The blog is basically about Salt Lake City’s historic Mormon chapels, and the photos are definitely worth looking at. From the blog you can click on a link to an article in the Salt Lake Tribune as well to see more photos and even a video tour showcasing some extremely beautiful chapels in the Salt Lake area. To get a feel for Mormon architecture, check out the site here.

  • Great Savings
Who doesn’t need to save a little cash now and then? This blogger has come up with several tips, Web sites and more to help people save money and get the most out of their coupons. For example, she bought 10 boxes of dishwasher detergent, worth more than $48, and got it for free. If you think that sounds like a good deal, I’m sure there’s plenty more to be found here.

  • President Monson’s Four T’s.
We’ve all heard about President Hinckley’s six B’s, but many of us haven’t heard of President Monson’s four T’s. What are they? Tears, trials, trust and testimony. The four T’s come from a talk President Monson gave in 1997, but the message he gave is still meaningful today. In his talk Monson says, “Faith forged in the furnace of trials and tears is marked by trust and testimony. Only God can count the sacrifice; only God can measure the sorrow; only God can know the hearts of those who serve Him—then and now.”  To read about the four T’s and to read all of President Monson’s talk, go here.

  • Do We Care Too Much What Other People Think?
This blog is really profound. The blogger has some wonderful, deep thoughts that I felt should be shared. She discusses the issue of caring about what other people think. If you’ve ever had the conversation the blogger talks about: Person A: “I’m upset because I did/said x and I got a negative reaction, people are annoyed with me, etc.” Person B: “Your problem is that you care too much what others think. You need to stop worrying about that,” then read this blog. It will probably give you some great insight. Check it out here.
